You can have your tree or wreath recycled at curbside -- either chop it up to fit into the yard debris bin, or pay a small additional fee for your hauler to pick it up (contact your hauler directly to find out when your next pickup is and how much it will cost).

Here are some other options in East County:

In addition to maintaining a Facebook fan page for ParkroseGateway.com, I sometimes browse Facebook for material or events to cover. Recently I ran across a group mysteriously called Laundry Love Parkrose. The statement on their group page says "For those living below the poverty line, washing clothes presents both a logistical problem and a financial hardship. Laundry Love Projects partner with local laundromats in cleaning the clothes the homeless and working poor."

The project is sponsored by Eastside Foursquare Church, which owns and operates the Quality Inn and Suites. We received a school newsletter today which explained a little more about the project. Volunteers will be at the Parkrose Laundry at NE 131st and Sandy Boulevard on Thursday, November 12 with quarters, laundry soap, and dryer sheets for anyone who is struggling to make ends meet and needs help getting the laundry done.  They'll continue doing this on the second Thursday of each month.

If you know of anyone who needs this assistance, please...

About 900 people attended the Parkrose Heights Neighborhood Party in Knott Park for National Night Out on Tuesday, August 4. Among the guests was Portland Mayor Sam Adams, along with Amy Ruiz, his Planning and Sustainability Policy Advisor.

The United Methodist Men of Parkrose United Methodist Church served up 450 hot dogs, plus fruit, bean salad, chips and lemonade. Cha Cha the Clown entertained kids with balloon hats, swords and animals, and face painters also decorated the kids. Everyone enjoyed hanging out in the park and listening to live music from the Insomniacs and the Eric Christopher Band (some even danced).

City Repair's Tea Horse also visited Knott Park. Volunteers set up the huge cloth wings, set out rugs and pillows, and the Tea Horse opened for business, serving free tea and cookies.

Plans are already under way for next year's event.

See pictures of the event here.

Fortunately for students and teachers, most of the Arctic Blast/Snowpocalypse took place during the winter break.  However, students in east county did miss three days of school during the last scheduled week of school in December.

The state of Oregon requires districts to provide a minimum amount of instruction each year, ranging from 810 hours to 990 hours (depending on grade level).  School districts are allowed to waive up to 14 hours due to severe weather.

David Douglas School District has told KGW TV that they will not (barring further snow days) be extending the school year.  They already had enough school days planned into the schedule to cover the required number of hours.

Parkrose superintendent Karen Gray told the EastPDXNews that the Parkrose District is still within its alloted amount of time off as well.

Portland Public students on the east side missed only three days of school, but students on the west side missed up to five.  According to the Oregonian, the district isn't sure whether they will be...

I was unable to attend Sam Adams' inauguration today at Parkrose High School, because the school district I work for was in session, unlike Parkrose.  However, Parkrose school board chair James Woods gives a humorous report on his blog.

By kmcdade

There are no closures or delays in the Parkrose/Gateway area due to weather for Monday, January 5 (as of 9:30 p.m. Sunday).  However, parents should know that while David Douglas and Portland schools are in session on Monday, Parkrose schools are NOT.  Parkrose students have an extra (planned) day of vacation; Parkrose teachers have a mid-year planning day.

And don't forget that Monday is also the day of Mayor Sam Adams' public inauguration at Parkrose High School, 12:00 noon!

Ventura Park Elementary in the David Douglas School District is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.  The school is holding a party on Friday, November 21 starting at 5:30 p.m., which includes a spaghetti dinner (tickets are $6.50 at the door).  Anyone currently or formerly associated with the school is encouraged to attend!

Ventura Park Elementary opened in 1958 as part of the Russellville School District, but quickly became part of the David Douglas district when the Gilbert, Powellhurst and Russellville Districts merged with the David Douglas Union High School District in 1959.

The school has played an important part in the district, hosting (at various times) the district's Talented and Gifted program, an MESD Functional Living Skills class for children with multiple and severe disabilities, and Life Skills classes for children with moderate developmental disabilities.

Ventura Park is also a Green School.  Students participate in classroom recycling as well as milk carton recycling and composting of...

Kidical Mass is a fun, family-friendly bike ride around the neighborhood.  The goal is to bring neighbors together to have fun and also to raise awareness of bike riders, and especially children.  We'll also have a quick bike safety orientation at the beginning of the ride.

As at many schools, Sacramento Elementary could use more parent participation, both in the PTO and in supporting their kids in reading.  This Thursday, they'll address both issues with one event.

Reading in the Moonlight will take place on Thursday, November 6 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Sacramento Elementary, 11400 NE Sacramento Street.  Families are invited to bring a blanket and pillow to enjoy free hot cider and books together.  There will also be a free book giveaway.

The monthly PTO meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.  Free childcare will be provided, and all parents are encouraged to attend.

I'll be there with my family.  See you there?

No, not Critical Mass -- this is Kidical Mass, a family-friendly bike ride through our neighborhood.

Kidical Mass began in April 2008 in Eugene, and quickly spread to Portland as well.  Rides are held on the third Friday of each month at various locations around Portland.  October 17th marks the debut of Kidical Mass in the outer NE area, right here at Knott Park.

Riders will gather near the baseball field at NE 112th and Russell at 6:00 p.m. for a brief safety talk, and we'll hit the road at 6:15.  It'll just be a brief ride on neighborhood streets.  It looks like it won't actually be dark yet, but we'll have some loaner safety lights available just in case.

Riders of all ages should wear helmets.  Participants are welcome to use a scooter or walk/jog along as well.  We'll have a sweeper cyclist in the rear to make sure no one gets left behind.

And if you'd like to decorate your bike in honor of Halloween, or wear a costume, you are welcome to do that, too!  Let's make a splash here in NE Portland!
